John Gillies, Secretary of Furnace Table Bowls Team, is taking a team of four athletes from Mid Argyll to next year’s Great Britain Special Olympics. He and Karen Heafey, a colleague from Lochgilphead Resource Centre, have been coaching Flora Currie, Campbell Ferguson, Iain MacDougall and Sandy MacKellar in Boccia and will go with them to Leicester for the games.

Boccia? It’s a sport for athletes with a disability and is not unlike bowls. Leather balls are tossed as close as possible to a white target ball on a long, narrow field of play. The Mid Argyll four will be part of a 350-strong Scotland West team.

Obviously the team has to raise money to contribute to their costs in participating in the event. They’ll be holding fund raising events in Mid Argyll. Donations will help enormously and can be arranged through John Gillies at Lochgilphead Resource Centre on 01546 603744.
